Yesterday, Centraal Museum opened it’s ‘Blue jeans’ exhibition, showing all that’s indigo. Here, Timo is holding the corresponding publication, for which we’ve assisted on the design. It’s basically a stack of booklets – with essays and visual content from the exhibition.

The GDFB is starting tomorrow and the program is stuffed with known and debuting design delight! While we’re actually pretty much occupied with two publication projects right now, we’re also very excited to be taking the stage for a small lecture on Friday sept. 21 at Breda’s Lutherse Kerk.

If you’re really into white marble and gold leaf, don’t forget to visit Antwerpen and see Jan Fabre’s Pietas series (from the 2011 Venice Biennale) while you still can. It served a good last stop in last weekend’s trip.
Though the Belgian artist’s symbolic references in iconography are a bit tacky (but cynical) the total of five marble sculptures (together with the joined Cocon I-X series) form a striking presentation in the renovated industrial warehouse at Park Spoor Noord. Comical felt slippers to walk the gilded platform included.
On display until august 23.

Utrecht get ready – new students are invading the city…
This morning was the kick-off for the UIT (Utrechtse Introductie Tijd) which is the first week for new students to get in touch with each other, the city and the educational institutions. It’s a big event in town hosting plenty of parties and with this year’s theme ‘Tot het UITerste’ (‘to extremes’) it surely promises a great introduction.

The past months we’ve worked on a campaign for Utrecht University designing this year’s UIT identity, printed matter (posters, magazine, booklets) as well as some spatial additions – and of course the whole shebang of small gimmicks and gadgets.

Plenty of good work, talks and drinks at yesterday’s opening of the HKU Grad Show in Utrecht. Just to highlight one of many many projects you’ll find, here’s one that’s standing up for the lot. If you’re planning on visiting this weekend, go say hi to Arti and Roos of the newly founded ‘De Lamme Haas’ publishers. They just ducked into hiding on this snap, but the (otherwise not that shy) bustling ladies will be at their stand selling all kinds of interesting printed matter, made by many different graduates.

The Graphic Design Festival Breda 2012 is still two months away, but we’ve been working hard to meet their early deadline! The GDFB has commissioned 45 international designers to design a poster for the third edition of the ‘Poster Project’, which we’re happy to be a part of. Here’s our sneak preview!
Also, we’ve been invited to give a small presentation at the opening day of the festival. Very exciting! So be sure to mark down September 19 - 23 on your calendar.

The “refined, just straightforward (even a bit childlike)” identity of the renewed Stedelijk Museum has had quite some Dutch press attention and critics’ hassle over the last couple of weeks. We just stumbled upon this short but insightful writeup in Creative Review, which also features some more possible visuals that go with the ‘S’ logo - and we must say, the more we see of it, the better we think of design studio Mevis & van Deursen’s take on the contemporary identity.

As Michael Evamy put it, a “radical and naïve” system, which we can only endorse. Especially when emphasized with Nietzsche’s fitting quote seen on the above poster proposal. Like!

Though it’s somewhat awkward staring at cats on a 600 inch screen for two hours - the ‘Poezenavond’ this week was a great fundraiser. All proceeds are donated to the Poezenboot (Catboat), cat asylum in the canals of Amsterdam.

The fourth Utrecht Manifest biennale investigates the ‘new working landscape’ of both designers, non-designers, and in particular the direct occupants of the Utrecht district surroundings of Rotsoord. Already started earlier this week, this month will have some exciting lectures and workshops under the artistic direction of Jurgen Bey of Studio Makkink & Bey.

  The English section of the website doesn’t seem to be fully functioning yet, but as far as you can read Dutch, take a look at the program.
 Also, Utrecht Manifest co-hosts a viewing of the ‘Alles Moet Nieuw - Piet Zwart’ film, which will be shown at the Louis Hartlooper Complex on May 23rd, 4 PM. We’ll be there!  

PS this edition’s logo kind of made us think of ‘De Mattenklopper’ - though probably a bit of a far fetch in the context of social design. Graphic design studio Experimental Jetset made a nice post about the design for Van Kooten & De Bie on their facebook wall back in February.

We visited Ship of Fools Gallery to see Andy Rementer and some of his new ‘sans outline’ works in gouache. After a short opening Andy gave a presentation about his developments in style and working contexts as a graphic designer / comic-artist / zine-publisher, illustrator and artist. A jolt of inspiration!
‘Andy Rementer - Going Places’ is on show until May 11.

Stunning work by Matthew Day Jackson in GEM Den Haag, in a wonderfully curated exhibition that gives great insight into the coherence of all his projects. We especially enjoyed the pieces where themes such as ‘fiction archeology’ and ‘techno decay’ met with pop-art references (plus: IKB pigments! First time we saw them in real life).
To get a grip on his concepts, be sure to watch the ‘fake’ documentary’s while you’re there.  
‘In Search Of…’ is on show until May 6th.

Us performing as ‘One Minute Sculptures’ in the Erwin Wurm exhibition, late 2011 in GEM Den Haag.
We are both big fans of Wurm’s concepts on sculpture and his playful, sometimes absurdist projects. Sadly we missed out on viewing his collaborative works with fashion designer Walter van Beirendonck in Antwerp…

Our entry in the Piet Zwart movie poster contest made second place!
On saturday April 7th we visited the GEM museum in The Hague where the Piet Zwart film was premiered - a thoroughly layered portrait of his life as an artist, designer and father.

Regarding the poster contest, the jury (i.a. Wim Crouwel and Mieke Gerritzen) stressed to pick a top five (instead of a just one winner) so we’re obviously very excited for making second place! Our poster will soon be exhibited in the MOTI museum in Breda.
